I-DESI 2020: how digital is Europe in comparison with the main global economies

The 18 December 2020, the CONNECT Directorate-General has published the new edition of I-DESI, l’International Economy and Digital Society Index which analyzes the positioning of EU countries in terms of connectivity, digital skills, use of the Internet, integration of digital technology and digital in public services in comparison with others 18 non-EU countries. The report extends the results of the Economy and Digital Society Index (DESI) of the European Commission, released in September.

According to the new report, i EU countries outperform their global counterparts in terms of digital skills, from basic to advanced ones, but they are constantly lagging behind in the digitization of public services. The best countries in the EU are on the same level or higher than the best countries in the world. Finland is the leading country in the new I-DESI index, in first place also in the DESI 2019 e 2020. The main non-EU country is the United States and the EU27 member states occupied four of the top ten positions for the main I-DESI index, followed by Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. However, the EU average is still below major advanced economies such as Australia, Japan, Canada or South Korea and ranks just above China.
